Panel Survey No. 3 - Social Justice

When new Prime Minister Gordon Brown was Chancellor, he presided over a decade during which social failure now costs us £102 billion a year. Fixing our broken society is the central mission of the modern, progressive Conservative Party, just as we fixed our economy in the 1980s. We believe the key is strengthening families.

Here are five key facts:

  • There are five million people of working age not in work.
  • The poorest people in Britain have got poorer under Labour.
  • There are more young people not in work or full-time education than ten years ago.
  • We have one of the highest rates of family breakdown in Europe.
  • Most European countries recognise marriage in their tax system; Britain doesn’t.

On 10th July, the Social Justice Policy Group, chaired by Iain Duncan Smith MP, published a report entitled Breakthrough Britain. I am interested in your views on some of the ideas in this report.

Panel Survey No. 2 - Democracy

In January I set up this new TellPhilip.com website to establish regular feedback with my constituents.

The first Philip's Panel was on the topical issue of local government structure for Shropshire. The results were revealing and were helpful in my discussions with Ministers.

With local elections on 3rd May, I am interested in your views on what motivates people to participate. Turnout in all elections has been declining in this country, and is especially low in local elections. I would like to know why you think this is and what you think can be done to improve exercise of our democratic right to vote.

Panel Survey No. 1 - Unitary Authorities

You will know from my regular email/column and news releases on my website, that I am worried about the plans to centralise local government in Shropshire by abolishing district and county councils and replacing with a Unitary Authority.

I believe firmly in local democracy. It seems right for a constitutional change that people in Shropshire should be able to express their view in a ballot. I will respect the decision of the electorate of my constituency.

It is for this reason that I have decided that my first quarterly survey should be on this subject.
